what to expect
What to expect before the session
What to Eat and Drink
Refrain from consuming coffee, prioritize hydration, and include a protein-rich snack within two hours of your scheduled appointment.
Dehydration and low blood sugar may lead to sensations of dizziness during or after the treatment and could heighten sensitivity to the needle experience. It’s important to note that the efficacy of acupuncture for pain relief is compromised by the consumption of coffee.
Ideally, avoid brushing your tongue or ingesting colored foods/candies that may cause staining (beets, tea, coffee, fruit, etc.) before your appointment - although it’s not a cause for concern if you happen to forget.
dress comfortably in loose-fitting attire
Ensure that your pants are sufficiently loose to facilitate easy pulling above the knee. If it is more convenient, feel free to bring an extra pair of shorts to the office. We are more than happy to provide sheets for draping if you need to remove tight clothing upon arrival.
What to expect during the session
disconnect
Please consider switching all electronic devices to airplane mode prior to entering the treatment room. This practice enhances your ability to be fully present and derive maximum benefits from your appointment.
New Patient Intake: During your initial appointment, I will carefully review your intake paperwork and engage in a comprehensive discussion covering your health concerns, health history, current symptoms, diet, and lifestyle. This process typically requires approximately 30-45 minutes.
Pulse assessment
During the pulse examination, my focus extends beyond merely determining heart rate. In accordance with Traditional Chinese Medicine principles, each internal organ resonates uniquely and can be detected through the pulse. This microsystem maps the internal organs onto specific points on each wrist. I meticulously evaluate the pulse in six different positions (three each side), assessing factors such as rate, strength, depth, and quality. This thorough examination, which spans several minutes, plays a crucial role in achieving an accurate diagnosis and monitoring your progress.
Tongue examination
Although it may seem unconventional initially, observing the changes in your tongue on a daily basis can be engaging and informative. The tongue serves as a reflection of your internal state, with different areas corresponding to distinct parts of the body. I conduct a comprehensive assessment, considering factors such as shape, color, coating, texture, as well as any lines or cracks present. Additionally, the examination includes an observation of the veins beneath your tongue. Notably, dark and distended veins may indicate stagnation or blocked energy. If this is observed, engaging in vigorous exercise and subsequently reexamining your tongue can reveal changes, with the veins appearing smaller and lighter in color.
Acupuncture Treatment
It is natural to experience some apprehension during your initial treatment; however there is no need for concern. The insertion of needles is typically painless and any momentary discomfort is minimal. Typically, acupuncture treatments involve retaining the needles for a duration ranging from 15 to 40 minutes. Throughout this period, you have the option to rest, listen to music, request a guided meditation, or simply enjoy a moment of quiet reflection.
Do the Needles Hurt?
the insertion of acupuncture needles is frequently imperceptible, with patients often reporting minimal or no sensation. In certain instances, a brief, mild sensation may be experienced, dissipating within seconds of insertion. Notably, even individuals with heightened sensitivity often express surprise at the remarkably painless and profoundly relaxing nature of the acupuncture experience.
What to expect After your session
I recommend ample hydration and a period of relaxation in the hours following your treatment. Engaging in strenuous physical exercise immediately afterward is best avoided; such activities are more beneficial before the treatment.
It is entirely normal to experience any of the following sensations after your treatments:
Relaxed or “spacey”
This state, referred to as “acu-stoned” can manifest as a euphoric sensation. If you find yourself in this state, it is advisable to sit down, hydrate, and assess your readiness to drive.
Energized
Acupuncture treatments have the potential to stimulate energy flow, resulting in a clear-headed, sharp, and invigorated feeling.
Sore
It is possible you may encounter some soreness at the insertion sites or in the joints and muscles following the treatment, particularly if it was focused on pain control. Any tenderness should typically subside within 24 hours.
